On Motherhood

@laurennburns shares her reflections on pregnancy, entering motherhood and the journey that lies ahead.

How was your pregnancy and birth experience?

I was very lucky in my pregnancy and experienced minimal symptoms - no morning sickness, swelling or food sensitivities.

I did a lot of birth prep to try and best get my body ready for the most life changing experience that is childbirth, and of course it was no “walk in the park” but it definitely paid off. I was induced but only in labour for 6 short hours before baby Maeve entered the world!

How are you finding your current motherhood chapter?

Every day is different. For the most part it is the best feeling in the world waking up to her little face - her tiny hands and perfect ears. I love that my sole duty is to provide for her. The slow days and contact naps are irreplaceable.

That doesn’t mean it’s not challenging at the same time. It’s been a huge identity shift, my body has a different function and doesn’t necessarily feel like mine anymore. The hormones are wild and sometimes you just need a good cry for no obvious reason. Postpartum isn’t the easiest chapter but I’ve been beyond blessed to have an amazing support network that have helped alleviate the weight.

What are some of the most rewarding parts of being a mother so far?

The newborn cuddles, milky smiles, finger holds, and the start of little smiles. Every day brings a new challenge but a much larger reward.

Do you have any advice for soon to-be mothers?

You can do it. Your body does know exactly what to do. Your motherly instincts will kick in. I was so nervous that I was underprepared or incapable, that I hadn’t done enough research or wouldn’t understand all the cues, but the moment they’re in your arms it all makes sense. Women are phenomenal.

What makes the Mum Bracelet meaningful to you?

It symbolises the greatest job I’ll ever have - being Maeve’s mum. It’s a beautiful and elevated piece that has meaning without being tokenistic. I’m so proud to wear it every day.
